Custom bracket and mount fabrication in Busan port

We design, fabricate and fit non-standard mounts for marine electronics in Busan: transducer fairings and blisters, sensor cages for trawl gear, antenna and mast brackets, console and display mounts, and retrofit adapters when a new unit does not match an old cut-out. The part is measured on board, made locally, then fitted and finished during the same port call. This is the piece of an installation that cannot be ordered online and that most suppliers cannot cover.

Jobs that overrun in port rarely overrun because of the electronics. They overrun because the new unit does not fit what is already welded to the vessel. The replacement transducer has a different bolt pattern from the tank it must sit in; the display is thirty millimetres wider than a console cut-out made twenty years ago. Waiting for a mount to be shipped in is not an option inside a port call, so we measure on board and make it here.

Transducer fairings and blisters are the most common item. On a hull with deadrise a flat-mounted transducer looks sideways, and the picture degrades with every degree of tilt, so the fairing is shaped to bring the face back to horizontal at working trim. The leading edge is faired so flow stays attached and the face does not aerate at speed. We set the offset from the hull form, keep clearance inside for the stuffing tube, and check the beam is clear of keel coolers and sea chests. Welding to structure is done under the vessel's hot work permit and with the yard; anything that opens the hull envelope belongs in dry dock.

Sensor cages for trawl gear are the second. Marport and similar sensors survive the water; what kills them is the door striking the bottom, wire abrasion and the drag over the stern ramp. A cage puts that load into the gear instead of the sensor body. Bars are spaced clear of the transducer face and the release path, edges are rounded so netting does not snag, and mounting is by shackle or clamp so the crew can change a sensor at sea in minutes.

Antenna brackets on masts have their own constraints. A GNSS or satcom antenna needs a clear sky view and separation from the radar beam and from HF and VHF radiators, and the bracket must put it there without turning the standoff arm into a tuning fork. We size wall thickness and gussets for the moment arm, allow for icing and green water, and keep the mounting face flat so the pedestal does not bolt down stressed. Where aluminium meets steel, isolating bushes, washers and sealant go in as standard.

Inside the wheelhouse the work is adapter plates and console mounts. When a new display is a different size from the one it replaces, we make a plate that closes the old cut-out cleanly, keeps the bezel line straight and holds the ventilation gap the unit needs behind it. Swing arms and gimbal cradles get built where the screen has to move for a sightline or watch position. Behind the panel, backing plates and DIN rail carriers hold processors, power supplies and switches on structure, not on their own wiring.

Material follows the location: 316 stainless or hot-dip galvanized steel outside, marine grade aluminium on masts, mild steel where it is welded to a steel hull so coatings and anodes still work as designed. Welds are dressed, edges radiused, holes deburred, and the part is primed and topcoated before it goes back on board. We measure on the first visit, cut and weld ashore while other work continues alongside, then return to fit. You keep the part, the fasteners and a dimensioned sketch of what was made.

What the job includes

  • Transducer fairing and blister fabrication — Faired steel or stainless housing cut to your hull deadrise so the transducer face sits horizontal at working trim, with clearance kept for the stuffing tube and cable.
  • Transducer adapter flanges — New unit into an old tank: an adapter plate made to the existing bolt pattern on one side and the new transducer flange on the other, with the correct gasket and sealing face.
  • Trawl sensor cages and gear mounts — Protective cages and clamp mounts for headline, door and net sensors, with bar spacing kept clear of the transducer face and rounded edges that will not snag netting.
  • Antenna standoff arms and mast brackets — GNSS, VHF, satcom and Sat-C brackets sized for the moment arm, positioned clear of the radar beam, with isolating hardware where aluminium meets a steel mast.
  • Satcom and radar foundation plates — Flat, stiffened deck or platform plates so the pedestal bolts down unstressed, with cable entry, drip loop and gland position set before anything is welded.
  • Console cut-out adapter plates — Plates that close an oversized wheelhouse cut-out around a new display, keep the bezel line straight and hold the ventilation clearance the unit needs behind it.
  • Display arms, gimbals and bracket mounts — Swing arms and gimbal cradles for sounder, sonar and plotter displays where the watch position or the sightline requires the screen to move or tilt.
  • Cabinet backing plates and DIN rail carriers — Mounting plates for processors, power supplies, switches and junction boxes so equipment is carried by structure instead of hanging from its own cabling.
  • Guards and supports for hull units — Protective structures and supports around transducer tanks, hull units and deck penetrations, including collars, access covers and trunk framing.
  • Remaking brackets that keep failing — Cracked, corroded or vibration-fatigued mounts rebuilt in heavier or more suitable material, with the failure point reinforced rather than repeated.

Timing

Timing depends on the part, on the material we have in stock and on how much welding and coating it needs. We give a realistic answer after the measurement visit, and we would rather say a fabrication will not finish inside your call than start it and leave you with an open hole. What we need from the vessel

  • Access to the mounting location, and the equipment itself or its footprint drawing, so we measure against the real part rather than a catalogue dimension.
  • The old bracket or the failed part if it still exists. Copying an existing item is faster and safer than measuring an empty space.
  • Someone from the crew who knows what runs behind the bulkhead or under the deck, and what must not be drilled or cut.
  • The vessel's hot work permit procedure, and yard agreement where welding to structure or grinding on deck is involved.
  • Power, lighting and ventilation at the work site for drilling, grinding and welding, plus safe access if the position is aloft or inside a void.
  • Honest port call dates and sailing time, so fabrication is scheduled to be fitted and finished before you leave.

Frequently asked

Can you make a bracket without the vessel alongside?

We can work from a drawing, from photographs with a scale reference, or from an identical part off a sister vessel, and that gets most of the way. A test fit is still needed, so if the schedule allows it we prefer to measure on board first and cut afterwards.

Do you weld to the hull or to structure?

Yes, where it is the right answer and the vessel and yard agree. It is done under the vessel's hot work permit and coordinated with the yard. Work that opens the hull envelope, such as a new transducer penetration or tank work, is planned for the vessel's docking rather than done alongside.

What can realistically be made in a single port call?

Adapter plates, console and display mounts, cabinet backing plates and most sensor cages. A faired transducer blister or a mast bracket that needs welding and coating takes longer, and the coating cure time is usually what sets the limit rather than the fabrication.

A bracket on board keeps cracking. Can you copy it?

Bring us the broken part. Copying it exactly repeats the fault, so we look at where it failed first, usually a weld toe in a vibration path, an under-sized section or a galvanic joint, and remake it in heavier or more suitable material.

Will a custom fairing hurt echosounder performance?

Done properly it improves it. The point of the fairing is to put the transducer face horizontal at working trim and to keep aerated water off it, which is what most weak bottom traces and lost bottom lock at speed come down to.
