Bridge electronics and onboard IT, fitted alongside in Busan
NAVION co., ltd has fitted, commissioned and maintained bridge electronics — and the onboard IT installed beside them — from a Busan service base since 2019, with a second office in Vladivostok. The constant in the work is the port-call window: the vessel is alongside for a set number of hours, and the job has to be complete when she sails.
NAVION co., ltd was founded in 2019 as a marine electronics company working the Busan waterfront. The work is installation, commissioning and service: taking equipment out of the crate, getting it mounted, cabled, calibrated and proven on the vessel it was bought for, then coming back when it drifts, fails or falls due for its annual check. The service base is at 214 Haeyang-ro, Yeongdo-gu, and engineers cover Gamcheon fishing port, the Yeongdo repair yards and Busan New Port, travelling to other yards on request.
Almost everything about how the company operates follows from one constraint: the vessel is alongside for a fixed number of hours, and the job has to be finished inside that window. That pushes effort forward — establishing what is actually installed before the ship arrives, staging cable, connectors and spares, agreeing what will be done at the quay and what will be checked once she is under way. A job that ends with an engineer promising to return next call is a job that failed.
The scope is deliberately wider than the bridge console. Trawl monitoring, echosounders and sonar, navigation and plotting software, GMDSS and radio, antennas and satellite communications, autopilots, compasses and deviation work sit alongside onboard IP networks, CCTV, and the brackets and mounts that hold all of it. These systems share cable runs, power and network segments, so one team covers them end to end rather than splitting a fault between two contractors.
NAVION is an authorized dealer for Marport with worldwide territory, for TimeZero in Asia, and for Olex in Asia and Russia. Koden equipment is supplied, installed and serviced as well. Dealer standing matters for parts routing, firmware and warranty handling; on board it matters less than knowing how a particular sensor behaves on a particular rig, and what it does when it starts to fail.
The customers are fishing vessels and commercial fleet calling at Busan. The Russian Far East fleet is the single largest current source of work, alongside foreign-flag vessels, equipment vendors and sub-dealers who need hands in Korea. A second office in Vladivostok, at 15 Svetlanskaya St., keeps that side of the business close to the owners and superintendents who order the work. Service is delivered in Russian, English and Korean — on the bridge, in the machinery space and in the handover paperwork.
How the work is actually done
- Finish inside the stay — Scope, parts and manpower are planned against the vessel's departure, not against a working week. What cannot be completed alongside is said before the job starts, not after.
- One team from antenna to access point — Bridge electronics and the onboard network are handled by the same engineers, so a fault that crosses from a sensor to a switch does not become two contractors and two invoices.
- Prove it under way, not only at the quay — A sounder or trawl sensor that reads correctly at the berth can still be wrong at speed. Where the schedule allows, systems are checked with the vessel moving and the gear working.
- Hand over the documentation — Settings, cable routes, offsets and the annual check record stay with the vessel, so the next engineer — ours or anyone's — starts from a written baseline instead of guesswork.
- Work in the crew's language — Russian, English and Korean on board. The people who operate the equipment are briefed directly, without a translator standing between the engineer and the watch officer.
