A trawl sensor that drops out, a sounder that loses bottom or a plotter that will not accept a chart update can be a transducer, a cable run, a power supply, a switch port or a software setting, and the engineer who opens the job follows it through all of those instead of handing it on halfway.

Every job here is planned around the port call. The vessel is alongside for a fixed number of days and the work has to fit inside them. Before arrival we agree what must be finished at the berth, what can be prepared ashore, and which parts have to be on the quay on the first day. Engineers attend at Gamcheon fishing port, at the Yeongdo repair yards and in Busan New Port, and travel to other ports and yards on request. If the scope proves larger than the window allows, we say which part is safe to defer to the next call or a yard period, rather than opening work we cannot close.

To get the right engineer and the right parts on the first visit, tell us four things. The vessel: name, type and flag. The dates: when she is alongside, and which area of the port or which yard. The equipment: manufacturer, model, and where known the software or firmware version and sensor serial numbers. The symptom: what the crew actually sees, when it started, what changed before it started, and what has already been tried. Photographs of the display, the error text, the transducer or antenna mounting and the junction box are worth more than a long description.

If the job must produce documentation for class, flag or an insurer, say so at the briefing stage rather than on the last day alongside. Work is carried out and handed over in Russian, English or Korean, with settings, calibration figures and as-fitted details written down for whoever opens the equipment next.
