NAVION is a worldwide Marport dealer, and trawl monitoring is the work our engineers do most often in Busan. Most jobs run inside a port call: the vessel comes alongside at Gamcheon fishing port or a Yeongdo repair yard, the crew hands over a list of sensors that stopped reporting on the last trip, and the system has to be working again before she sails. We plan Marport installation and repair around that window, not around a workshop schedule.

A full installation starts at the hull. The transducer or hydrophone has to sit where it can hear the gear astern without being blinded by propeller wash, bubble sweep-down or hull-borne machinery noise, so the position is decided against the vessel's fairing, keel line and existing wet ends. We run and label the cable clear of power runs and frequency converters, terminate it at the receiver, and mount the Scala2 PC and display where the skipper can reach them. Retrofits onto an existing wet end are common; before reusing old cable we measure insulation resistance and check the connector for water ingress.

On the sensor side we commission catch sensors, trawl eye and trawl explorer units, door sensors reporting pitch, roll, depth and temperature, spread and symmetry pairs, and headline height sensors. Each unit is configured in Mosa2 for channel, telemetry rate, transmit power and depth or temperature offset, and the channel plan is written down so no two sensors share a slot and the uplink stays clear of the vessel's echosounders and sonar. In Scala2 we build the pages the skipper watches at the haul: door spread and symmetry, headline height and clearance, catch fill, with alarm thresholds set to values the crew chooses.

Most call-outs are not dead sensors. Readings that fade below a certain depth, spread figures that jump, or a catch sensor that only reports when the winches stop are usually acoustic or electrical faults: a corroded pin at the wet end, water in the cable, a hydrophone face fouled with paint or growth, or interference from hydraulics, refrigeration compressors, a shaft alternator or an inverter with a poor ground. We hunt it with the receiver's noise display, running machinery item by item, so a reception problem is separated from a sensor problem before anyone buys a replacement.

Battery and charger handling accounts for a large share of avoidable downtime. We check charger docks and contacts, clean and dry sensor contact pins, inspect end caps, O-rings and pressure housings, and renew seals that are flattened or nicked. Trawl sensor calibration is checked the same way each time: depth against the echosounder and the vessel's draught, temperature against a known reference, spread against warp marks and door geometry.

Verification happens on the water, not on the quay. On the outbound run or a short sea trial we watch every sensor come up, confirm range holds at working depth and through the turn, and check that readings stay stable with the winches and deck machinery running. Before we leave you get the channel and serial list, the saved Scala2 workspace, a note of firmware versions, and a written record of what was found and what was replaced.

What the job includes

  • Full Marport system installation — Hull transducer or hydrophone siting and fitting, cable routing, receiver, Scala2 PC and wheelhouse display, plus first configuration and handover to the crew.
  • Hull transducer and receiver replacement — Removal of a failed wet end, insulation and continuity testing of the existing cable, refit or renewal, and re-termination at the receiver.
  • Sensor commissioning and channel planning — Catch, door, trawl eye, spread, symmetry, depth and temperature sensors configured in Mosa2: channel, telemetry rate, transmit power and offsets, with the plan documented.
  • Scala2 setup and display configuration — Building the haul pages the skipper uses, geometry and gear data entry, alarm thresholds, data logging and NMEA sharing with the plotter or echosounder.
  • Trawl sensor calibration checks — Depth compared against the echosounder and draught, temperature against a reference, door spread against warp marks and gear geometry; offsets corrected in Mosa2.
  • Acoustic noise and interference survey — Receiver noise display used while machinery is run item by item: hydraulics, refrigeration, thrusters, inverters and shaft alternators, to find what is masking the uplink.
  • Sensor charger and battery service — Charger dock and contact checks, pin cleaning, end cap, O-ring and pressure housing inspection, seal renewal, and the charge and storage routine gone through with the crew.
  • Firmware and software updates — Sensor firmware and Scala2 or Mosa2 versions brought into line, with settings and workspaces backed up before and after the update.
  • Sea-trial verification — Outbound run or short trial: every sensor confirmed live, range checked at working depth and through the turn, readings watched with deck machinery running.
  • Sensor and spare parts supply — Marport sensors, chargers, cables, connectors and seal kits supplied as a worldwide Marport dealer, delivered to the vessel in Busan or to a sub-dealer.

What we need from the vessel

  • Access to the wheelhouse console, the sensor locker and the trawl deck, with net-mounted sensors reachable
  • Ship's power available on the console circuits for the receiver and the Scala2 PC
  • A crew member who knows the gear: door type and size, warp marks, headline configuration and normal spread
  • Machinery available to run during a noise survey, including hydraulics, refrigeration and thrusters
  • Dock time and yard approval if a new hull penetration or a wet-end change is in scope
  • Berth area, ETA and ETD confirmed in advance so the scope can be cut to the port call

Can a complete system be fitted while the vessel is alongside?

Sensors, receiver, Scala2 PC and configuration can normally be done alongside. A new hull penetration for a transducer needs dock time and yard approval, so if the wet end is being renewed we plan it around a docking rather than a working port call.

Our sensors read fine in shallow water but drop out deep. Is the sensor finished?

Usually not. Range that collapses with depth points at the reception path: a fouled or badly sited hydrophone, water in the cable, a corroded connector, or machinery noise on the same band. We check reception first with the receiver's noise display before condemning any sensor.

Will Marport data work with the plotter and echosounder already on board?

In most cases yes. Scala2 can share sensor data over NMEA and the ship network, so door spread, headline height and catch data can be brought onto the plotter display. We confirm what your existing system accepts before quoting the interface work.

Do you service sensors that were bought from someone else?

Yes. We service, configure and calibrate Marport sensors regardless of where they were purchased, including units already several seasons old, and we say plainly when a housing, seal or battery pack has reached the end of its life.
