Echosounder and sonar installation and service in Busan
NAVION installs, commissions, repairs and calibrates fishing and navigation echosounders, netsondes, searchlight and omni sonars on vessels calling at Busan. Work covers the whole chain: transducer and its mounting, cable run, transceiver, display and the NMEA link into the plotter. Engineers attend at Gamcheon fishing port, the Yeongdo repair yards and Busan New Port, and travel to other yards on request.
Fishing and navigation sounders fail in a small number of predictable ways, and most of them are found at the transducer end rather than in the display head. NAVION works on single-beam and split-beam fishing echosounders, navigation sounders used for bridge watchkeeping, netsondes, searchlight and omni sonars, on vessels lying at Gamcheon fishing port, in the Yeongdo repair yards and at Busan New Port. Engineers bring test gear to the ship, so the first hour goes on proving where the fault actually sits instead of swapping parts.
Transducer installation is decided by hull form and by what the vessel can give us. A through-hull fitting in a sea chest or a flooded well is acoustically the cleanest but needs the ship dry, or the well isolated and drained. A welded blister or fairing puts the face clear of the boundary layer and clear of plating turbulence; we build the mounting and set the fore-and-aft and athwartships alignment so the beam stays vertical at working trim. Transducer cables are pulled in continuous lengths wherever the route allows, kept out of the trays carrying inverter and drive cabling, and terminated with the screen earthed at one end only.
Most "the sounder has gone weak" calls turn out to be noise, not a dead transceiver. We check for aeration and cavitation across the face at speed, cross-talk between the sounder, sonar, netsonde and Doppler log when they ping on overlapping frequencies, and electrical noise from converters, drives and shaft generators arriving through the ship's earth. Insulation resistance and impedance readings taken at the transducer plug, then again at the transceiver, separate a wet or damaged element from a cable fault or a failed output stage. A transducer reading low to hull gets replaced; it cannot be tuned back.
Commissioning sets the draft offset and sound velocity first, then gain, TVG, pulse length and ping rate for the depths the vessel actually fishes or transits. Bottom lock and bottom discrimination are tuned against a known seabed, and the range shift and depth alarm are checked so the trace is not lost when the ship rolls. Split-beam systems are calibrated with a standard target in sheltered water when the schedule and the berth allow; where they do not, we record the settings and the outstanding calibration so the next port call can take it up.
Depth is only useful once it reaches the plotter. We interface sounders to TimeZero and Olex over NMEA 0183 (DPT, DBT, DBS) or NMEA 2000, set talker and listener baud rates, confirm the sentence carries the offset the plotter expects, and check that logged seabed data is referenced to the waterline through the entered draft offset, not left as raw depth below the transducer face. Position and heading feeds into the sounder and sonar, netsonde telemetry, and network sounder links to bridge and deck repeaters are set up and demonstrated with the crew watching.
Failed transducers, transceivers, cables and displays are supplied from stock or ordered in, and we will quote a like-for-like replacement or a change of make where the existing mounting and cable run can be reused. On completion the settings, wiring changes and the readings taken are handed over in writing, so the next engineer to open the unit is not starting from nothing.
What the job includes
- Transducer installation in hull, blister or sea chest — Through-hull fitting in a sea chest or flooded well, or a welded blister and fairing set clear of the boundary layer, aligned vertical at working trim.
- Transducer replacement after failure — Impedance and insulation checks at the plug and at the transceiver, removal of the failed element, refit and re-sealing, then a fresh commissioning of the set.
- Transducer cable runs and terminations — Continuous runs where the route allows, routed away from inverter and drive cabling, glands sealed, screen earthed at one end, plug pinned out and tested.
- Transceiver and display replacement — Like-for-like swap or change of make where the mounting and cable run can be reused, including console cut-outs, power supply and repeater feeds.
- Commissioning and calibration — Draft offset, sound velocity, gain, TVG, pulse length and ping rate set for the depths the vessel works; split-beam standard-target calibration where conditions allow.
- Bottom-lock and discrimination tuning — Bottom lock, bottom discrimination, white line, range shift and depth alarm checked against a known seabed so the trace holds when the ship rolls.
- Interference and cavitation diagnosis — Aeration over the face at speed, cross-talk between sounder, sonar, netsonde and Doppler log, and converter or shaft-generator noise arriving through the earth.
- Sounder-to-plotter NMEA interfacing — Depth into TimeZero, Olex or the ECDIS over NMEA 0183 (DPT, DBT, DBS) or NMEA 2000, with baud rates, talkers and the depth reference point verified.
- Searchlight and omni sonar service — Hoist and training gear checks, hull unit and dome inspection, transceiver and control-head faults, bearing and range alignment against a known target.
- Netsonde and trawl sounder support — Hull hydrophone and receiver checks, cable and connector faults, and matching netsonde display settings to the sounder so both read the same water.

What we need from the vessel
- Access to the wheelhouse console and to the transducer space: sea chest, tank top, void or trunk, opened and ventilated
- Ship's power available on the sounder circuit, and confirmation of what may be isolated and when
- An officer or crew member who knows how the vessel actually uses the sounder and sonar
- Make, model, frequency and transducer type sent in advance, with photographs of the display fault and the transceiver label
- Permits arranged by the vessel or yard for enclosed-space entry and for hot work if a blister or foundation has to be welded
- Quiet time on the berth or at anchor when calibration and bottom-lock tuning are needed

Frequently asked
Can a transducer be replaced while the vessel is alongside?
Only if it can be reached dry. A transducer in a flooded well or sea chest that can be isolated and drained is workable at the berth; a wet through-hull element normally waits for dry-docking. What we can do inside the port call is confirm the transducer is the failed part, prepare the new cable run and mounting, and have the unit ready so the yard swap is short.
The sounder holds bottom at anchor but loses it at speed. What causes that?
Usually air and turbulence over the transducer face rather than a fault in the electronics: a mounting position in disturbed flow, a damaged or fouled fairing, or aeration carried down the hull in a seaway. We check the mounting and the flow first, then look at pulse length, TVG and bottom-lock settings before condemning any hardware.

Can you get the sounder depth into TimeZero or Olex?
Yes. Depth goes across on NMEA 0183 as DPT, DBT or DBS, or on NMEA 2000, and we set the baud rate, talker and port assignment on both ends. The part that matters is the reference point: we verify whether the sentence reports depth below transducer or below keel, so that seabed data logged into the plotter is not offset by the draft.
Do you calibrate split-beam systems?
We carry out standard-target calibration where the berth, weather and schedule allow it, since it needs sheltered water and quiet time. Where the port call does not allow it, we complete the settings and checks that can be done, record what is outstanding, and pick the calibration up on a later call.
