Antenna and satcom installation and removal in Busan

NAVION installs, aligns, commissions and removes marine satellite antennas on vessels calling at Busan: VSAT domes in Ku and Ka-band, Inmarsat FBB and Iridium terminals. Work covers the whole chain, from the line-of-sight survey and pedestal mounting through cable runs, deck penetrations and grounding, to commissioning with your airtime provider. It is planned around the port-call window so the vessel sails on schedule.

Satellite antenna work on a vessel alongside is decided before anyone goes aloft. We start with a line-of-sight and blockage survey: walking the monkey island, mast platforms and funnel deck, plotting obstructions by azimuth and elevation, and checking what crane booms, kingposts and the radar scanner do to the beam in service. That survey fixes where the dome lands, how long the cable run is, and whether the job fits the port call. We do this across Busan, in Gamcheon fishing port, the Yeongdo repair yards and Busan New Port.

Mounting is a structural job as much as an electrical one. A VSAT pedestal needs a flat, stiff foundation, so we check the landing for flatness, shim where required, and stay off the top of a mast where whip and vibration keep the stabilisation loop working harder than it should. Bolted pedestals and adapter plates are usually faster alongside than welding and avoid a hot-work permit; where a welded foundation is unavoidable we arrange the permit with the vessel and the yard. Dissimilar metals are isolated and the dome bedding is sealed properly rather than smeared.

Cabling is where installations quietly fail. The ADE-to-BDE run carries L-band IF, DC and control on one coax, and the loss budget at the top of the band limits how long that run can be, so we measure the real route rather than the drawing and pick cable to suit. Deck and bulkhead penetrations go through proper transits or glands with drip loops below them, coatings are made good, and the run is kept clear of HF antenna tuners, radar cable and high-current circuits. Grounding is bonded to ship structure with short, low-impedance straps, with coax surge arrestors at the entry point.

Commissioning is done with the airtime provider on the line. The antenna control unit needs a clean heading input, gyro NMEA HDT or a satellite compass, and a correct bow offset, or the dome will find the satellite and lose it on the first turn. We set skew for linear polarisation, check cross-pol isolation and compression with the teleport before TX is enabled, log RX level and Eb/N0, and load the satellite and beam maps. Blockage sectors and RF radiation-hazard zones are programmed as TX-mute so the transmitter stays down when the beam points into a mast, a crane or a working deck.

Antenna removal is a real job, not an afterthought. Before drydock, a vessel sale or a change of provider we dismount the dome and pedestal, cap and label cable ends so a refit is straightforward, blank and seal the penetrations, and crate the unit for shipment. We will also tell you what has to happen on the provider side: a terminal that is physically removed but still registered keeps generating airtime charges. If the antenna comes back after docking, the alignment record from the original fit shortens the reinstallation.

Satcom rarely arrives alone. On most of these jobs we are also in the router, the firewall and the VLAN split between crew Wi-Fi and ship business traffic, or setting failover between VSAT and an Inmarsat FBB or Iridium backup so the bridge keeps email when the dome is blocked. Say so at enquiry stage: planning network and antenna in one visit is cheaper than a second call.

What the job includes

  • Line-of-sight and blockage survey — We walk the monkey island, mast and funnel deck, plot obstructions by azimuth and elevation, and pick a position clear of stacks, crane booms and the radar beam.
  • VSAT dome installation, Ku and Ka-band — Pedestal foundation and levelling, dome landing, ADE-to-BDE coax run, and siting of the antenna control unit and modem in the radio room or bridge console.
  • Inmarsat FBB and Iridium terminal fitting — Above-deck unit mounted and aligned, coax run and terminated, below-deck terminal sited, handset and Ethernet drops pulled, activation done with the provider.
  • Mast and monkey-island mounting — Bolted or welded pedestals and adapter plates, flatness and level checked, placement chosen away from mast whip, hot work coordinated with the vessel and yard.
  • Deck and bulkhead penetrations — Core drilling or cut-out, cable transit blocks or glands, sealing and reinstatement of the coating, drip loops and tray routing clear of radar and HF runs.
  • Grounding, bonding and surge protection — Short low-impedance straps to ship structure, isolation between dissimilar metals, coax surge arrestors at the entry point, and separation from high-current runs.
  • Azimuth, elevation and skew alignment — Heading input from gyro or satellite compass, bow offset set and verified, skew set for linear polarisation, cross-pol and compression checked with the teleport.
  • Commissioning with the airtime provider — Modem line-up, satellite and beam maps loaded, RX level and Eb/N0 logged, TX enabled only after the network operations centre confirms the carrier is clean.
  • Blockage zones and radiation-hazard setup — TX-mute sectors programmed for mast, funnel and crane blockage and for deck areas where crew work near the dome, so the transmitter drops before it points at people.
  • Antenna removal and dismounting — Dome and pedestal removed before drydock or vessel sale, cables capped and labelled, penetrations blanked and sealed, unit crated for shipment or later refit.

What we need from the vessel

  • Access to the mast or monkey island, and a working-aloft permit where the vessel's system requires one. We stop work aloft in strong wind or heavy rain.
  • Vessel power for the above- and below-deck units during commissioning, and agreement on putting the radar to standby while people are working near the dome.
  • A heading source at the antenna control unit: gyro NMEA HDT or a satellite compass output.
  • Airtime provider details: the account, the terminal activation contact and a network operations centre line for the commissioning window. We cannot transmit without them.
  • An engineer or electrician who can show us cable routes, spare penetrations and the ship's earth points.
  • Vessel and yard permission for hot work if a pedestal or platform has to be welded.

Frequently asked

Can a VSAT dome be installed while the vessel is working cargo?

Often yes, but not in every position. Work aloft has to be coordinated with crane movements, and the transmitter stays off until the deck around the antenna is clear, so we plan the aloft phase for a window when the gear near that mast is idle. Wind and heavy rain stop work aloft regardless of the schedule.

Do you supply the airtime contract?

No. We install, align and commission the hardware against whatever provider you already use. For the commissioning window we need the account details and a contact at the provider's network operations centre, because cross-pol and carrier line-up cannot be completed without them on the line.

What do you need before quoting an installation?

The antenna make and model, whether a pedestal or adapter plate already exists, where the below-deck equipment will sit, and photos of the mast and monkey island. That is usually enough to estimate the cable run, the mounting work and the time alongside.

Can you remove an antenna before drydock and refit it afterwards?

Yes. We dismount the dome and pedestal, cap and label the cables, blank and seal the deck penetrations and crate the unit. Keep the alignment record from the removal, it makes the refit much quicker. Deactivating the terminal with the provider is on the owner's side, and worth doing so billing stops.
